Most of the songs runs up to D5 and are executed without falsetto. That is not a low tenor. I think the very high resonance in his voice makes one to think that he is singing lower than he actually is.

As a side note - when talking about great metal/rock voices there is a one often forgotten.. Namely David Byron. One of the most operatic and versatile voices in rock genre.JeeJeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17273145218193646176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388536289795007069.post-26810085651719320402014-04-10T11:11:15.113-07:002014-04-10T11:11:15.113-07:00You should listen to the argentinan DIEGO VALDEZ, ...You should listen to the argentinan DIEGO VALDEZ, singer of HELKER, TRIDDANA and ELECTRONOMICON. He IS good, but certainly not one of the best.
My top 3 would be:
James LaBrie(Dream theater), King DIamond (Mercyful Fate), Robert Lowe (Solitude Aeturnus)
Why? James is a tenor who can put so much emotion into his songs, he deserved to be on the list. Kind Diamond has a really ass-kicking falsetto, and its just incredible what Robert Lowe can do with his voice.GoBluehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09889253428118126708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3388536289795007069.post-56900530536233654212014-03-08T16:21:08.070-08:002014-03-08T16:21:08.070-08:00"He also sings with a fairly high larynx in h..."He also sings with a fairly high larynx in his upper range, which is what enables him, as a baritone, to hit those stratospheric heights with flexibility and precision"
Hi, but, how is this a requirement? That I know high larynx in high notes is a choice used to achieve lighter timbrical result when one has control on it, but one can maintain a neutral or low larynx as well. If not controllable it's usually regarded as a symptom of excessive tension and tighetening, especially of the swallowing muscles in high notes.
I guess Tate used it as a timbrical choice back then. In the years to come I'm deluded to agree he lost control and girth on his voice, maybe for smoking who knows. Because one with a solid technique should be better with years not worse. Think about Kevin Richards, the aforementioned Dio, Ken Tamplin. And a now old tenor, Angelo Loforese which at over 90 can still utter a perfect and clean full high C, complet with volume dynamics. What's more he's still teaching to his students. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LmWwHArtVo&feature=c4-overview&list=UU3n9SXeaVz6smDVkgfjSi4A, where he gives great tips and check some old lessons where he hits a great head voice/mix (but who cares the label, the point is it has fullness and power) F5 at 70 (!). I come from a gospel and jazz background and found classical and opera on my way to being a pop star. A winding road indeed! But I find the technique is the same across the board. Classical technique has helped my define what I should be singing how to develop my own style. It has enhanced all of the other genres I sing. The stylistic qualities vary across genres, but a healthy sound is the best way to access and maintain any stylistic nuances. More people need to be aware of this. Thanks for this.Herhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02221179721151182065noreply@blogger.com
